To get the Club membership offer for seniors, Sam’s Club will redirect you from their website to verify your identity through the ID.me website. This process works the same way for the Plus membership, as well as for the military discount detailed below. By comparison, BJ’s Wholesale Club also uses ID.me to verify eligibility, while Costco uses a company called SheerID for verification.
Sam’s Club Military Discount
Eligible military members, veterans, and their spouses can get 60 percent off a Sam’s Club membership, bringing the cost down to $20. Eligible military-affiliated people can also join as Plus members for only $60. You also get $10 off an in-club purchase when you renew your membership.

- Active military personnel

Sam’s Club Plus Membership Perks
Sam’s Club sometimes offers early shopping hours to Plus members only. These perks can include early in-club or online access to “doorbusters” or other offers, discounts, or promotions.2 Note that the concierge shopping service for seniors is no longer available. Sam’s Club’s Scan & Go is the hallmark benefit of the outlet’s Plus membership. With Scan & Go, Plus members can hold their phones over the QR code on store merchandise, then leave without the need to wait in line to pay. This feature has the potential to save tons of time, particularly during peak shopping periods.

Sam’s Club vs. the Competition
Even at full price, Sam’s Club’s Club membership is $50 a year and Plus membership is $110, which is $20 cheaper than Costco’s Executive membership fee of $130. Costco’s $65 Gold Star Membership (a regular membership) is also more expensive than Sam’s Club’s $50 annual Club membership fee. BJ’s membership costs fall in the middle at $60 for a regular membership and $120 per year for the Club+ Card Membership.
One important thing to note: Although Costco and BJ’s offer similar new membership discounts for members of the military, first responders, health care workers, and teachers, they do not offer the same discounts to seniors like Sam’s Club does.
Current Promotion! Join Sam’s Club now as a new member and get a Club membership for only $15 a year, or get an annual Plus membership for $50. See Samsclub.com for details.
Locations
In terms of availability, there are currently 600 Sam’s Club stores across 45 U.S. states and Puerto Rico.3 Sam’s Club parent company, Walmart, however, has announced ambitious plans to open many more Sam’s Club retail locations over the next decade (15 each year) and to renovate existing stores as well.4 Competitor Costco, which has a slightly higher store count at 625 (800 worldwide5), also has plans to expand. Neither Costco or Sam’s Club have store locations in Rhode Island, but unlike Costco, Sam’s Club has two retail locations in Wyoming and five locations in West Virginia.
BJ’s Wholesale Club operates far fewer locations — 252 clubs and 188 BJ’s Gas locations in 21 states — but also has announced expansion plans that include several clubs in the south and in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2026.6
Features
Much like Sam’s Club Scan & Go, BJ’s has a quick checkout feature called ExpressPay. Costco, on the other hand, has been testing in-store scan-and-go capability. However, currently, a speedy payment option (called Express Checkout, which saves your credit card information) is only available for online purchases. If you loathe waiting in long lines, Sam’s Club and BJ’s might be more appealing than Costco, if they have stores in your area.
Other Membership Benefits
Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s all offer a popular top-tier membership benefit that offers a 2 percent awards bonus on purchases. BJ’s Plus membership also includes two free same-day deliveries, while regular Club members pay $14.99 for same-day delivery. BJ’s members can get unlimited same-day deliveries with the purchase of an add-on to their memberships for $100. Costco contracts with Instacart to offer same-day delivery. Sam’s Club offers free delivery on purchases over $50, which is a benefit not matched by their competitors.
Generally, Sam’s Club’s gas and grocery prices are competitive and might beat the competition in some locations. The best big box membership option for you, however, might come down to very individual factors such as location convenience or a particular item or service (such as travel or optometry) that you prefer in one store or another.

Bottom Line
Although Sam’s Club has discontinued some of the perks seniors enjoyed, such as early shopping hours and concierge shopping service, we think memberships offer great value for seniors. Members get access to lower prices on gas, prescriptions, and groceries, and Plus memberships can be of particular benefit for older adults. Plus members get free shipping and delivery on eligible orders, early shopping and access to special promotions, and 2 percent Sam’s Cash back on eligible orders. Sam’s Club employees will even load pickup items into your car, a helpful perk for older adults with mobility issues.
