Home Helpers Pros and Cons
Pros
- Highly qualified caregivers: Home Helpers employs qualified and compassionate caregivers who are background checked, extensively trained, and insured. Home Helpers also uses a matching process to pair each client with the right caregiver.
- Wellness calls: In addition to the actual home care services, Home Helpers caregivers can facilitate check-in calls to help seniors feel less isolated. On these calls, a caregiver can provide meal, medication, and exercise reminders.
- Financial assistance for veterans: Through Veterans Care Coordination and Patriot Angels, Home Helpers makes it easier for veterans to find and pay for the right type of home care for their needs.
- Alzheimer’s and dementia home care: Home Helpers offers personalized care for older adults with Alzheimer’s or dementia. These caregivers are highly skilled and certified in Alzheimer’s care through the company’s partnership with the National Certification Board for Alzheimer Care.
Cons
- Not every location offers specialized services: Locations vary in terms of the services they offer. Not every location will have support for stroke recovery, respite care, and/or recuperative care.
- No skilled nursing: Home Helpers provide nonmedical care only, as their caregivers are not registered nurses or licensed practical nurses.

Home Helpers Review
Background
Founded in Ohio in 1997, Home Helpers has expanded to over 232 locations in 39 states. Through their team of compassionate caregivers, the company’s goal is to provide care that allows older adults to live independently and comfortably in their homes.
Services
Home Helpers services include personal care, companion care, stroke recovery care, wellness calls, medical device monitoring, live-in care, respite care, and specialized services for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
- 24/7 care: If needed, caregivers can reside in your home and provide additional assistance throughout the day. Home Helpers can also provide 24-hour shift care, in which you will see multiple caregivers throughout the day without any gaps in care. Or if you want 24/7 care virtually, Home Helpers can provide monitoring through a medical alert device called Direct Link.
- Nutrition and well-being: Home Helpers caregivers are committed to making sure you follow a healthy, balanced diet. In addition to providing companionship, they can prepare nutritious meals.
- Wellness calls: Caregivers provide additional companionship through daily or weekly wellness calls. This accountability service is great for checking in on your health and wellness.
- Support for stroke recovery: Caregivers from Home Helpers can offer support if you’re recovering from a stroke. By creating a personalized care plan, they help you reach ideal recovery outcomes.
- Other specialized care: Home Helpers can also support people with memory impairments such as dementia, people in hospice, and people who just got out of surgery, among other medical issues. But again, the company only provides nonmedical care.
- Respite care: Respite care can fill in the gaps when a family caregiver has other matters to attend to, which can be a great solution to caregiver burnout.
Customer Experience
Each Home Helpers franchise is independently owned and operated, so your experience and prices may vary from ours. That said, here’s what we experienced:
- Home Helpers services cost between $25 and $42 per hour. The cost varies by location, day of the week, and client needs, although each location has their own pricing.
- Most locations require minimum shift lengths of four hours.
- All caregivers are thoroughly background checked.
- Home Helpers tries to keep you with the same caregiver, but it’s not always possible, particularly if you have only one or two visits per week.
Overall, we were pleased with the service and care we received from Home Helpers. The company’s call agents were friendly and knowledgeable, assuring us they could quickly dispatch a caregiver after an initial in-home visit.
Third-Party Reviews
As a franchise, each Home Helpers location has their own customer reviews on websites such as Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. However, across all locations and platforms, Home Helpers has overwhelmingly positive customer reviews, better than any other home care company we’ve worked with. Let’s take a look at a few customer experiences across the U.S.:
“My mother was diagnosed with dementia and has progressed to needing home care. I tried a few times and she wasn’t very pleased. Then I tried Home Helpers Home Care. Something about their staff is special. They interact with her in a friendly way that is ‘non-threatening’ to her ego or independence. They help her with her daily living activities and have been really great with guiding her in her diabetes care. Since they have been helping my mom her blood sugar is down, her mood is improved and I csn finally trust that she is okay if I have to leave town for work. (I am a truck driver so i really used to worry leaving her ) The improvement to both of our lives is truly amazing. My deepest gratitude to the staff for their heartfelt care. As far as I am concerned, they are now honorary family members themselves. I cant thank them enough!”- Melbourne, Florida
“Home Helpers has been a blessing. I called to have assistance for my mom & from the start Andrea was there to guide me every step of the way. She was caring & knew exactly what my mom needed. Andrea even helped through my little meltdown. The aides that were assigned to my mom were very nice & caring. They never made my mom feel like she was a burden when she needed help. They treat my mom with respect. Special kudos to Faye who keeps my mom on her toes. If you are in need of home care for a loved one please give Home Helpers a call. You won’t regret it.”- Philadelphia, PA
“Consistent communication. Consistent coverage. Caregivers have been patient, honest, and willing to take direction well.”- San Mateo County, California
Cost and Pricing
Each Home Helpers location is independently owned and operated, so pricing will vary based on location and the level of care needed. Our clients in Boca Raton, Florida, for example, have paid $25 to $28 an hour for basic home care like meal prep and driving clients to appointments. People that required more intense care, such as assistance with bathing and grooming, paid $27 to $34 an hour. This location prefers that clients book shifts of at least four hours, with at least 12 hours booked per week, though they are open to accommodating various schedules. Given that the median cost of home health aides in Florida is $30, according to Genworth, Home Helpers might be cheaper than average.
Another location in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, requires six-hour–per-shift minimums, the longest we’ve seen. The weekday hourly rate was $34, while the weekend rate was $36, which are both higher than the state average of $31.
Finally, our clients in Scottsdale, Arizona, paid $36 to $42 an hour with a four-hour–per-shift minimum. The cost of care depends on both the client’s location and their needs. This is a pretty typical price range for Arizona, which has a median cost of $36 per hour.
