Cox Mobile currently offers two plans: Pay As You Gig and Gig Unlimited.

Pay As You Gig comes with unlimited talk and text as well as 1GB of data. If you exceed this data allowance, you’ll be charged $15 for each additional GB. Keep in mind, 1GB of data is roughly the amount required to stream 80 minutes of standard-definition video.

Gig Unlimited comes with unlimited talk, text, and data. Because of this, it’s ideal for heavier users of music and video streaming. We must note, however, that while this plan puts no caps on data usage, your data will be deprioritized after 20 GB of data usage in a given month. This means that you’ll likely experience slower speeds after reaching this threshold.

Cox Mobile Plans for Seniors

Cox does not offer specific discounts or plans for seniors; however, we think their Pay As You Gig plan is a great option for older adults. For $15 per month, it’s hard to find a more affordable deal on unlimited talk and text. While 1 GB is a relatively small data allowance, seniors who primarily use Wi-Fi for internet access on their phone should have no issues.

How to Purchase Cox Mobile

In order to be eligible for Cox Mobile, you must first be a Cox Internet customer with active service in your residence. Also, if you are already a Cox customer, your plan must be enrolled in their EasyPay program.

Current customers interested in Cox Mobile may begin the enrollment process by purchasing a device on the Cox Mobile website.

Cox Mobile Pricing

Cox Mobile prices start at $15 per month and are paid monthly as a charge added to your Cox Internet plan. Both plans have a base price subject to tax, activation, and other service fees.

Cox Internet prices start at $50 per month, but if you combine internet and mobile, you'll save $15 off the cost of internet; this is the same cost as 1GB of data per month. In other words, 1GB of data is free.

So, for internet and cellular service, you can expect to pay as little as $50 a month. However, if you want unlimited data for $45 a month combined with internet — which ranges from $50 to $150 per month — expect to pay anywhere from $95 to $195 a month.

Extra Fees

Cox does not have any early termination fees or fees for using too much data; you’ll simply be charged for the data you use — nothing more, nothing less. However, if you do not pay your bill on time, you may incur a late fee of 1.5 percent more than your owed balance, plus a collection fee of $20, at least. Additionally, you’ll have to pay a $10 activation fee for each new phone line you purchase.

Want to call people around the world? Cox’s mobile plans include free calling to Canada and Mexico. If you want to call other countries, you’ll have two options:

• World Plan: After you buy your Cox Mobile line and have had 30 continuous days of service and one in-full payment, you can add the World Plan. It includes over 240 countries for an additional $45 a month.
• Travel Day Pass: Your second option is the Travel Day Pass. It has the same requirements as the World Plan but lets you make international calls on an ad hoc basis. You’ll pay $10 for each 24-hour period you either talk, text, or use data while you’re abroad in over 150 countries. However, you’ll be capped at 0.5GB of cellular data, 60 SMS text messages, and 60 minutes of calling per day.

Cox Mobile Network Coverage

Cox Mobile is a carrier on Verizon’s 5G and 4G LTE networks, giving customers access to some of the nation’s best cellular service across the United States. Remember that you have to sign up for Cox Internet first, so be sure to check its provider availability in your area.

Data Speeds

According to Cox Mobile’s broadband facts, on either plan you can expect the following in terms of data speeds:

• Download speeds: 9-702Mbps
• Upload speeds: 11-643Mbps
• Latency: 49-64ms

While these speeds (on the high end) are similar to those of Verizon, there is great potential for variance with Cox Mobile. In our experience, we found that data speeds fluctuate drastically throughout the day.

That said, these fluctuations only impact data-related tasks, like streaming. Calls and texts came through quickly and clearly at all times.

Cox Mobile vs. T-Mobile

While Cox Mobile has a cheaper starting price of $15 per month, these prices quickly escalate with data usage. Also, Cox will deprioritize your data speeds after 20GB of data usage; T-Mobile provides 50GB of high-speed data before deprioritization.

For Cox subscribers, Cox Mobile will be the cheaper option — provided you don’t use much data. For people ages 55 and older, T-Mobile is definitely the better option.

Bottom Line

If you’re already a Cox Internet subscriber, then Cox Mobile is definitely a deal worth considering. However, if you plan to use your phone for streaming music and video outside of the home, Cox Mobile’s affordability quickly goes out the window.

That said, for those who primarily use their phones for talk and text, Cox Mobile is one of the best deals out there — provided you already have Cox Internet.
