Verizon Internet Plans and Pricing

Verizon currently offers four different home internet packages. While they all utilize Verizon’s highly reliable fiber-optic connection, they differ in terms of speeds and pricing.

Plan Availability

Verizon Fios home internet is currently available in the following states:

• Delaware
• Maryland
• Massachusetts
• New Jersey
• New York
• Pennsylvania
• Rhode Island
• Virginia
• Washington, D.C.

It’s important to note, however, that Verizon Fios internet isn’t necessarily available in every part of the state. Generally, you’ll find that availability is centered around major metropolitan areas within the above states.

Additionally, some plans are only available in certain locales. For example, Verizon’s Fios Internet 2 Gig plan is currently only available in parts of New York City. This is good news for Big Apple residents who need the fastest speeds around. I live in the Providence, Rhode Island, area, so I had access to the first three tiers of Verizon plans.

Verizon Internet and Mobile Bundles

Much like other telecommunications companies, Verizon offers a steep discount on its Fios home internet to those who already have cellular service with the company. To qualify for this discount, you’ll need to already be subscribed to a Verizon Unlimited Plus phone plan, which costs $55 – $65 per month. When you add home internet service to your plan, you’ll receive a $25 monthly discount on your internet bill.

We must note, however, that this discount applies only to existing Verizon mobile customers. If you purchase a new Verizon phone plan and then add home internet, you’ll only receive a $5 – $10 monthly discount.

Verizon Internet Senior Plan

As of this writing, Verizon doesn’t currently offer a specific internet plan or discount for seniors. However, they do offer Verizon Forward, a program that gives eligible subscribers a $20 discount on their monthly bill.

To be eligible for Verizon Forward, you must first be eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal benefit that helps low-income individuals pay for internet access. Once you’ve been approved for the ACP, you can check on Verizon’s website to find out if you’re eligible.

My Experience With Verizon

To purchase Verizon home internet, I first visited their website. This was where I could confirm that they serviced my neighborhood, and I could view their different plans. Ultimately, I opted for the 300 Mbps plan, as it would only cost $59.99 per month. Additionally, Verizon threw in a $200 Target gift card once I subscribed.

Once I chose my plan and entered my payment information, I then chose a time when a Verizon tech could come set up my internet. I should note that depending on where you live, there might already be existing Verizon equipment, allowing Verizon to remotely activate your internet. Since I was moving into a new home, however, someone had to come set up my internet in person.

Installation

Once a tech specialist from Verizon arrived at my home, he took one look at my home’s electrical panel and informed me that the prior owner of my home had a different internet provider. Because of this, he explained, the total setup process was going to take a couple of hours. Luckily, there was nothing to do on my end. I sat back, shopped for used furniture on Facebook Marketplace, and waited for my Wi-Fi to be up and running.

Roughly two hours, several trips into my basement, and a cherry-picker later, my Wi-Fi was up and running. I was especially impressed with how thorough the Verizon tech specialist was. Before deciding where to install my new modem and router, he asked several questions about my living situation and my internet usage. Ultimately, he decided to install my equipment in the basement, right next to the location of my home office. With this location, I had a strong Wi-Fi signal throughout the entirety of my home.

After my Verizon home internet was up and running, my tech specialist also suggested that I download the My Verizon app. With this installed, I could accomplish a number of tasks, including:

• Changing my home network’s name and password.
• Accessing a QR code to log into my network (great for house guests).
• Managing my bill and account information.

Using My Internet

Overall, I was very impressed with the performance of my Verizon home internet. I paid for a plan with 300 Mbps download speeds, and in my numerous speed tests, I found that my internet consistently performed well.

Both my partner and I work from home, spending our days on video calls. We also often stream multiple television shows at the same time. With past internet providers, we’ve often noticed dips in our internet speeds that can get in the way of these tasks. With Verizon, we noticed no such issues. So while we had reservations about getting Verizon’s cheapest internet offering, we have found it offers more than enough speed for our needs.

My Bill

To give you a better idea of how much you might stand to pay for Verizon’s internet, here’s a breakdown of my first billing statement.

The first charge you’ll notice is $59.99 for my 300 Mbps plan. The next charge for Home Device Protect represents the costs for my modem, router, and tech support. Next, you’ll notice the $10 discount because I’m enrolled in AutoPay, which means my bill is automatically paid through my checking account each month.

In total, my bill ended up being $49.99 for the internet and $25 for equipment. If, however, you have your own equipment, then this bill might be cheaper.

Verizon vs. Cox Internet

As a Rhode Island resident, I had access to two main internet providers, Verizon and Cox. In the chart below, I’ve compared their most affordable packages.

Overall, Verizon offers slightly faster internet at a similar price point. Additionally, Verizon doesn’t put any caps on the amount of data you can use with their internet plans, while Cox caps you out at 1,280 GB and will charge an overage fee of $10 per additional 50 GB used.

Bottom Line

Verizon may not be the most affordable internet provider for seniors; however, what they provide is an ultrafast home internet experience with excellent customer service. Despite their lack of discounts for seniors, we’d still wholeheartedly recommend this provider.
